Phoenix, Arizona – Education Action Alliance applauds the Governor’s veto of HB 2438, the ban on transgender Arizonans updating their birth certificate to reflect their affirmed gender. Governor Hobbs has also vetoed HB 2062, a bill that would regulate and redefine gender through state statute.
Transgender Arizonans have been under attack through campaigns of erasure and disinformation, national orders, and proposed state and local policies meant to codify that disinformation.
Arizona’s current legislative session has shown this to be true: perennial bathroom bans and pronoun restrictions, gender regulations and banning birth certificate updates.
All of these bills complicate or erase the lives of transgender Arizonans. The attack on our community is fueled by cruel disinformation and a desire to score political points. Attacks on education, healthcare, public spaces, and government documents are a coordinated effort to remove trans and nonbinary people from public discourse and spaces, as well as our documented existence.
We know this current environment can feel unsafe for many who don’t have identity documents leaving them unable to travel or access education, healthcare, housing, and employment. We know these turbulent conditions exist in schools that prevent school from being a safe and welcoming place to learn and grow. This is not the world Education Action Alliance envisions.
Education Action Alliance works with students and families to navigate and advocate through a system that is actively working to erase one’s lived experience. We work with educators and administrators on ways to affirm and advocate for queer students; and we work to educate and activate school communities to take collective action on their behalf.
This is a historic time and Education Action Alliance was built for this moment. The veto of these bills sends a message that Arizona law will not be party to the erasure of transgender people and we thank Governor Hobbs for her continued support.
