Phoenix, Arizona – Education Action Alliance applauds Governor Hobbs vetoing a series of harmful anti-trans bills, including legislation aimed at restricting pronoun use, banning bathroom access for transgender students, and imposing a 25-year liability on providers of gender affirming healthcare. These follow earlier vetoes of gender regulation mandates and birth certificate restrictions targeting transgender Arizonans.
These vetoes come at a time when transgender people, particularly youth, are facing an onslaught of coordinated attacks. National executive orders, state bills, and school district policies meant to codify that disinformation.
We know that for many LGBTQ+ students, especially transgender youth, school no longer feels safe. This is not the world Education Action Alliance envisions.
We work alongside students and families to navigate and advocate through a system that is actively working to erase one’s lived experience. We support educators and administrators in affirming queer youth, and we activate school communities to take collective action in defense of inclusive learning environments.
Transgender people deserve to live without discrimination, surveillance, and violence. The veto of all these bills sends a message that Arizona law will not be party to the erasure of transgender people and we thank Governor Hobbs for her continued support.
