They can’t ban us all, can they? The current president signed more executive orders on Day 1 than any other president has signed in one year, with more orders issued in the following days. Some are blatantly unconstitutional. Some are already being legally challenged and likely to be slowed or even overturned by the courts. All are designed to create chaos and inflict harm – ending birthright citizenship, declaring it the policy of the United States to discriminate against trans people, banning federal funding for programs affirming transgender people, and more. February 5 was Women & Girls In Sports Day, a celebration of the achievements of women and girls in sports and promoting women and girls’ sports. This was the same day the President signed an executive order banning trans women and girls from participating in sports that align with their identity. Cruelty is the point.
In Arizona, the GOP are pushing gender regulation, banning the Pride flag, regulating pronouns, banning bathrooms – and most recently – a total ban on trans healthcare for young people. Sponsored by Sen. Leach, SB 1687 is a comprehensive ban on trans healthcare for patients under 18. It bans care and criminalizes doctors for caring for or referring patients for care. Knowing this bill will be vetoed by the Governor, this bill simply highlights the misguided obsession some politicians have with transgender people. Locally, Peoria Unified School District's Governing Board’s president, Heather Rooks, lost her court case about her verbal exploitation of Bible verses in an office board meeting setting. In the recent eight-and-a-half hour board meeting, not much of substance was discussed and Rooks insisted that she will double down on her flagrant and public use of the Bible.
There is no quiet part – it’s all out loud. Remember: The chaos isn’t a side effect; it’s the goal. These extremists in power want to overwhelm us with cruelty, chaos, and confusion, hoping we’ll freeze and appease. We won’t. We can’t. Building community and organizing is the way to defeat these authoritarian efforts.
Connecting with allies and community members is vital in this moment and we know that building community in the face of adversity is this history of trans and queer people. Check in with your folks. Support mutual aid efforts. Speak out against inhumanity. |
